Current Rules, README please.

Post by Zeus »

These are the current rules, they will be amended with decent suggestions. They are prone to change at any time without prior notice. In the end though pretty much all of the following can be boiled down to 'Be nice and considerate' and 'Use some common sense'.

Failure to follow any of these rules will result in a kick/ban.
Thank you for your co-operation.

1. Please visit viewtopic.php?t=36 for additional rules. Or don't, and just get kicked when you do something wrong
2. English only in main chat
3. Ops don't need to explain themselves
4. Fascism is allowed, nay, encouraged
5. Anybody using excessive amounts of leetspeak, txtspk, LolCats or CAPITALS (ie. you being an idiot on main chat) will be kicked. You're at University, act like you have a writing age above that of a 13 year old.
6. Trolling/flaming will get you kicked/banned
7. Thou shalt have a spakeable nick
8. Excessive use of c&p will get you kicked
9. Spamming WILL get you kicked
10. Do NOT ask about how to get BitTorrent to work on campus because it doesn't
11. You must learn the difference between American and English time.
12. You're here to share and download. If every user shares only the absolute minimum, the community dies. Don't be an asshole about sharing. This means whatever you download you should share yourself for as long as you have the file.
13. Minimum version DC++ 0.674, or equivalent
14. There will be NO discussing, mention or even possible mention of the abomination this country calls Big Brother. It is scum, enough said. In fact, ALL reality tv discussion is banned. This includes, but is not limited to, x-factor, britains got talent, big brother, strictly come dancing etc.
15. Yes, ITS is wank. Yes, windows "is teh suck". Yes, ResNet is lamer than a handicapped mentally retarded vegetable. Yes, the campus situation sucks. Yes, Leamington is a long way from campus. We already know, whatever you you want to complain about, we know about it, your mistake, your life, your shit, not ours.
16. Dont: ask when new episodes are coming out, or ask if anybody has episode *** of ***. You WILL get kicked - we are pissed off with it. Go to http://www.epguides.com OR SEARCH FUCKNAMIT
17. Do NOT share incomplete downloads or installed files and folders – e.g. C:\WINDOWS & C:\Program Files
18. Not sharing what we *know* you have downloaded gets you kicked and banned, end of argument.
19. There is a minimum share that is applied to the hub. This is liable to be changed at any time but for the most it will remain constant. It will be displayed when you first connect and you can find it at any time using the -minshare command. This is in place to prevent people from leeching completely, that said however, if it is blatant that you ARE leeching then you will be kicked irrespectively.
20. We have enough ops as it is. You will not be made one if you ask.
21. Segmented Downloads or Multi Sourcing is banned on campus. This slows down the download speeds on campus and both the computers (seeder and leecher).
22. Any spoilers for new episodes will get you a kick up your arse, waiting about a week to discuss current tv shows is considered good practice
23. Asking why you were kicked results in a kick, read the damn kick message

We request that you:
a) Read the DC++ help file, available by typing /help in the main chat - it answers all of the simple questions that people always ask. Failing that there is the FAQ on the twofo wiki (http://www.twofo.co.uk/wiki/index.php/FAQ) for more answers.
b) Stay within the twofo network while downloading.
c) Have a legitimate tag showing when logging in to twofo.
d) Do not hide your IP when connecting.
e) Have an up-to-date DC client of version 0.674 or higher. We recomended the twofo ready DC++ client found at http://www.twofo.co.uk/resources/twofoDC++.exe or that you get the latest client (found at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dcpl ... 0.7091.exe).
f) Have a sane number of slots open. 1-3 is recommended on campus depending on your share size. Off campus 1 should suffice due to the speed of uploads.
g) Do not close another user's connection. If you have to, message first.
h) Please do not search for file extensions only. It lags the hub.
i) Treat people like you want people to treat you.
j) Appreciate that this hub is run for your benefit.
k) Relax and be happy! :-)

Doing any of the following is likely to get you kicked and possibly banned:
l) Do NOT share installed applications.
m) Do NOT share BIG .VOB files unless are in a correctly labelled folder.
n) Do NOT share pre-teen/under-age/incest/rape/lolita/animal porn
o) Do NOT share racist or other potentially offensive propaganda material (Music, docs, pictures)
p) Do NOT share incomplete KaZaa or DC++ downloads.
q) Do NOT share installed files and folders e.g. C:\WINDOWS & C:\Program Files
r) Do NOT advertise for any events or societies (Except for RAG - which is a charity)
s) Do NOT ask when an episode is being aired or if it is on the hub. It annoys users a lot and you can find this information out yourself by visiting [url]http://epguides.com/ or http://www.tv.com/ Please also remember that there is a difference between American and British time. Something airing at 8pm in America, will not have aired until about 3am here. After that there is the time taken to encode and torrent all new episodes. Please stop asking for things before this has had time to take place!
t) Do NOT disconnect an OP when they are downloading your filelist. This is likely to get you kicked immediately
u) Do NOT bother asking if you can become an OP. If it is decided that we do require another OP, it will be decided by the current OPs and will not be influenced positively by nagging.
v) Do NOT fakeshare or share fakesharing programs. Failure to comply with this rule will most definitely not be taken lightly and you will be banned for at least a week. Feel free to write a 1000 word essay (minimum) on why you were so stupid and pathetic that you had to fakeshare even though the minimum share limit is set at a reasonable level, you scum. Then, and only then, will we consider reducing your ban.

Netiquette:
# The hub owner is always right.
#OPs may not always be right, but their actions must be taken as such (if not, we get a bollocking from the owner)
#If an OP asks you to do or stop doing something, please comply. Repeated failure to do so simply results in a longer ban.
# If you are going to ask for a slot, be very polite and state which file(s) you want. Keep in mind users who share a lot are in demand and thus are less likely to be able to grant you a slot. If the user has something like 'No slots granted' in their description, it is highly likely that you will not get one. People will generally grant a slot for rare stuff; rare stuff does not include new stuff. If you do not ask nicely you are very unlikely to ever get a slot and the user will feel like giving you a kick... bear in mind if you do this to an OP, you will more than likely get a kick...
# Be friendly in main chat, if you're mad with someone PM them. However if the person thinks that you are being abusive you may get kicked.
# Before asking if anyone is sharing a certain file please, for the love of god, search for it first. We all understand searching at times is insufficient, but please search first. Also note, if you are on campus, episodes can take a while to appear and so it is unlikely that they will be around the morning after they have aired. When new things do arrive, they will appear on your searches.

To report any abuse, breaking of rules etc. that you feel is important, simply PM an OP with the time, date and nick of the abusive user. We will try to be as helpful as possible.
Finally Ops have a twisted sense of humour, bear with it. ;-)

[w) Oh yeah and STFU about Tux ffs!]

There is NO hub that contains any users/files, I can connect to all of them and they are all empty. I've only seen users/files twice but at least I know the problem is external.

I think you'll find that if you leave DC connecting long enough, you will connect properly to the hub(s). Even though DC says it is connected, it actually isn't and will eventually timeout. Twofo currently has about 50 people on it and had around 100 lat night, about half of whom are on campus.

I think I'll leave to to try and 'connect' for 48 hours while I see if I can connect outside of Resnet.
Ban me now if you can and safe me the effort of connecting.

Dude we're a lot of off-campus users on the hub. I never get disconnected unless I take my clients offline myself.

I think u getting all empty hubs may have somethin to do wit ur level of skills... learn to use the software/client then come back n try again!! If u still after trying to learn the software fail to comprehend how to connect. May I suggest a course in Computer Basics?? U may like to try courses like "What is a computer?", "What is a mouse?", "How to use ur Mouse?", etc

what the hell ech, the reason he is getting empty hubs is because he is on campus, and rather than letting you connect to the hubs... it says connected but displays no users (basically not actually connecting you)

why u being so harsh?? It's not his fault

lol.. probably hit the 0.7% then.. I've been working in the software and hardware industry for several years.. I have helped run some of the biggest DC++ hubs in scandinavia.. I really doubt u kno more than me!!

But concerning the relavance of the discussion to this thread.. I will no longer post in this thread.. (Zeus: I promise! seriously :P)

Suggestion for another rule:

#If your download never gets past the "Connecting..." stage, either give up or PM the user - you may be unable to connect due to on/off campus issues. Don't keep retrying forever, that just wastes hub bandwidth.

Edit: OK so an average of 2200 hopeless connection messages a day only wastes 90KB

Edit again: DC++ doesn't show the connection attempts it makes that never get past the SYN_SENT stage, so most off campus users won't be aware of all the people on campus in active mode making connection requests, unless they check netstat. I have configured my firewall so the packets don't leave my computer, instead of waiting to timeout at the university firewall.

That is mostly likely the case - I've had a few comments using the contact form where people think they've done something wrong or are not sharing enough, when it's been due to the subnet ban.

I think we should post on the main page when a subnet ban occurs, or even have a real-time, updating thingie on there, but that will take a bit of effort.
