What a bunch of liars
Some of you may have received the e-mail from ITS blaming peer-to-peer filesharing as the cause of bad connectivity on campus. To make matters worse, then then threaten to "disconnect and investigate each case". All I have to say to them is how comes the network worked fine the last few years? There was even an on-campus hub but the connectivity was much better. You're being paid £5/week to provide such a terrible service and you blame it on us!
It worked fine before and there hasn't been a significant increase in campus Internet users. Although filesharing has in general increased recently, decent traffic shaping can solve most issues with it and if we were allowed (or not disconnected by running) an internal hub, it would solve issues even further because people wouldn't need to connect outside as much. Thus I conclude that the problems we're having are due to ITS's incompetence and crazy policies.
If I was on campus, I'd be complaining and trying to get the union involved in this matter. Just remember that you can pay under £20/month for an ADSL service which would be much better than ITS's one, but they have the monopoly here so can screw you over.
