ITS Blocking Ports

Hey there.
I woke up this morning to find that my internet service had been disconnected by ITS for using DC++. I tried to talk to them about why it was causing a problem, and it seemed that their main concern was due to external traffic. I tried to mention the idea of having an internal hub but it doesn't seem as though it went down that well as they had other concerns about it...I don't know what they are though.
I think it's kind of ridiculous that they can block your room's port because you're using P2P. I'm waiting right now for them to get back to me and see if they are going to take any 'further disciplinary action'.
I don't know if this is happening to other people as well or if I'm just the first in a long line of people, but this should just be a heads up...

shit dude sorry to hear that. that's worrying for me seeing as you're in the same block and all...
surely external traffic is still low even though the hub is off-campus?

Yeah, it should be lowish, it depends on if you are uploading to people who are off campus, even then though, their connections limit the speed, ergo the amount of data transferred shouldn't be *too* high even then

yea I reckon its just ITS trying to blame P2P on the fact that the ResNet sucks.. bad excuse really.. they could just network it properly and P2P wouldnt be such a big deal.. Will be interesting to see whether they take further action.. I haven't yet heard of anyone getting a fine tho..
It seems they may just have started a witch hunt.. but lets see

'tis a very sad day. At the very least, you should be getting back £5/week for your connection being terminated.
Hopefully this incident will encourage people to actively get together and complain, preferably through the union. ITS have a monopoly and are abusing their status by providing a terrible service and on their unfair terms.

[2005-11-15 09:23] <astropoint> looks like it was the majority of users on campus though

Thanks Coco.
I spoke to ITS and they told me to set up a meeting as well. I think my internet got disconnected at about 11:45 AM or something like that.

Awww damn that sucks so much!
Yeah def. fight for your money, and your connection back.
Confirms ITS can map ports to rooms as per "JANET" legalities then.

still bermused on why they insist on "restricting" bandwith in certain halls then.
Meanwhile: My internet speed update, it took 3 attempts to load this reply box, the 3rd of which worked, with about a 60 second load up time.
Hrmph. Focus group here I come.
BTW. If you are serious about attending focus groups sign up here:
http://www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/onlinesurvey/retention/
and apparently they give you a £10 Amazon Voucher,
(which you could spend if the internet was fast enough)
^^^^^^^ This isn't ITS focus group, it's Uni focus group in general.

Maybe ITS have been reading this and though 'oh crap they're onto us' and increased your speed to pacify you?

The guy from my flat had his meeting and he says that they will be reconnected later today, which is good news, tho this hasnt happened yet.
Apparently it something to do with them looking at whos doing what on the network and the people who were constantly at the top of the list were called for a meeting (and disconnected for 24hrs).
I'm not surprised tho as this guy did leave his pc on 24/7 downloading stuff. I'm hoping the odd bit here and htere they will turn a blind eye to, tho who knows?
