Which software can i use to rip DVD's to DivX *.avi format without distorting picture and quality but having it compressed.

Auto Gordian Knot pretty much does everything for you

Although you'll need to download DVD Decrypter to actually rip the DVD onto your hard drive first.
As for picture quality, you're always going to loose some when compressing, but for a normal movie, 1400MB is a good size and perfectly good quality for watching.

I don't think the latest versions of Gordian Knot actually come with DVD Decrypter. As far as I know, the last version that did was 0.28.7.
I used to use gordian knot, but it started messing up the final files sizes of the rips (2CDs became ~3GB) so I moved over to AutoGK and haven't had any problems since.
