There aren't many free firewalls around the place. I've heard good things about Comodo firewall (which is free) though, although I've never used it for a significant amount of time myself.
Or there's something like Kerio, which is good and although not free, will continue to work for the most part after the trial license expires.
The Windows XP firewall (assuming you have Service Pack 2) isn't actually that bad in that it does all the thing that a firewall is meant to do (ie. block things). It's just rather unconfigurable and tells you sod all about what it's doing

I personally use Tiny Personal Firewall which is very good, easily configured and has a relatively small footprint. It is not readily available now as CA took over Tiny Software but there you could get the CA firewalls, though i can not say how easy they are to use or how well they work.

I was just naming free ones there.
Especially given that nobody on here promotes the use of pirated software

well fuck all this political crap
get Norton for free, then activate it with a keygen that gives u >10 years liscence. McAffee blows but is more or less free if i remember correctly
windows firewall works, and unless your a geek that likes to play with things, its fine
there, said it, piracy is illegal, but blow it
