Right... as there has appeared to have been some 'confusion' about what client to use, I thought that I would create a thread clearing stuff up.

For windows, we [always have and always will] recommend the latest DC++ Direct Connect client which is availiable to download for free from http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net. This client does NOT contain any spyware/malware/viruses/trojens/worms/anyothershitthatyoureallydon'twantonyourcomputer unlike many other clients that exist.

Edit by astropoint: There is now a twofo configured version of DC++ with stunnel available for download at http://www.twofo.co.uk/resources/twofoDC++.exe This version is the latest version of DC++ and has been preconfigured to have the ideal settings for using DC++ on campus (disabling of some of the not so needed features).

This client is by far the most stable one that exists as it has had the most development on it.

For linux there are a number of clients that you can use, it is probably best to use Valknut [although the interface is appauling] although others do exist: microDC, LinuxDC, etc

For Mac OS: Shakespeer is probably the most used one

Should you choose to ignore our advice and choose to use a different client we recommend that you use a client that supports TTH hashing as this will allow you to connect to the greatest number of people.

Final note: DC++ < 0.674 contain some pretty major security issues and can damage data anywhere on your hard disk. oDC is based on DC++ v0.306 and therefore does not support hashing and is therefore shit (and so banned).

Do *not* use beta versions of dc++, since this will simply result in it crashing, having connection issues with other versions of the client bla bla bla.

Download *STABLE* releases, not bloody betas.

EDIT - I forgot to insult you all: asshats. There it's done now we can all die peacefully.

DC++ version 0.698 is now the current stable version.

This version is not compatible with oDC, very old DC++ versions, microdc or valknut 0.3.7.

Any Linux user who wishes to continue using valknut will need to use my modified version, available here http://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~csucda/valknut.html

Otherwise, I suggest Linux users use LinuxDC++.

I have a couple of issues connecting....

I have been using a 3 year old version of DC++ without realising this wasn't a good idea (this should probably be made more clear somewhere). Apologies for this.

I was cut off today, and at the time, a couple of users decided to bombard me with obscenities. This is great, well done and you're obviously really intelligent. However, don't you think it would have been more productive to tell me what the problem was?!

Anyway, I've downloaded the latest DC++ from the right source. How do I re-connect? I keep getting 'This hub is running version 0.7.14 of Open DC Hub.' Any help would be appreciated, or you can throw more curses at me if you think that would help

if ur on campus, use stunnel and do whatever it says on the http://www.twofo.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Help:Contents webpage

otherwise, use the off-campus help on the same webpage

There is a guide for Mac users at http://www.twofo.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Connect#Mac_Users

If you are getting online and being asked for a password then you have chosen a nick that has already been registered. Change to something else (or remember your old password if it was you that registered it) and you should be fine

This is assuming you are on campus. Off campus you can just connect to hub.twofo.co.uk:4144 without stunnel
