Messaging protocol IRC to be enabled on the ResNet - 28 November 2005


The use of some messaging applications has been made difficult for customers of the ResNet service since the IRC protocol was disabled. This protocol is going to be re-enabled today at 12:00 in response to requests by students who have attended the ResNet Focus Group meetings on Wednesdays at 12:30.

IRC was disabled some time ago in order to resolve an incident. A form of virus seemed to be exploiting this way of communicating on the network and was damaging performance. Since we no longer have evidence that this is the case it is clearly appropriate to re-enable use of IRC. We hope that our customers will find this a useful improvement.

Ha, the IRC server I've been using this whole time has been working anyway...ah well.

also should allow on-campus users access to IRC channels like the comp socs channels.. so definetly very good news.. its an improvement..

in other words "someone played with our toys and somehow blocked IRC, we have now found the rule that blocks IRC and we will try to make it sound as though we are doing someething really useful in a lame attempt at getting the resnet users back on our side. please tell us we are good."
