Again this probably stems from the illusion that DC++ is exclusively for Warwick University.

I would say repeatedly pointing them to the introduction to DC++ might explain these concepts to them better.. but the link is already there and I doubt anybody reads it :P

Hell, most people don't even read what they're installing when they see a "press next to continue" button.

Repeatedly pointing them at the link to the wiki page obviously doesn't work (judging by the large number of people still not knowing ow to put an IP in), and that is meant to help them use it :P
Now imagine trying to point them at a page that explains what DC++ actually is and how it is relevant to the file sharing community as a whole.
Good Luck! :D

True. Perhaps a glossary of useful DC++/networking terms on the wiki or something might help. Although, as you pointed out, I doubt it would get read anyway.

(And there may already be something like that)

Quoted from the 2nd line of the wiki
"There is an excellent guide for 1st time users of DC++ at http://www.b.ali.btinternet.co.uk/DCPlu ... arted.html "

[21:30] <holidayspirit> i can't download anything guys, but i can get file lists - can you advise, please?
[21:30] <yoinkster> now why is that going pisspoor slow
[21:31] <yoinkster> holidayspirit, try putting your IP from http://checkip.dyndns.org/ into the IP (or External/WAN IP) box in File -> Settings -> Connection Settings. Make sure it is the CORRECT IP before asking further questions (Just because it was one thing yesterday doesn't mean to say it is the same today as it does change from time to time). Many searching/downloading problems are caused by an incorrect IP or lack of the IP.
[21:31] <Zed0h> holidayspirit: is your IP right?
[21:33] <Smelly_Kat> *panic* *panic* *panic*
[21:33] <Smelly_Kat> argh! I hate pre-exam stress

That's classic.. noobs that don't read the hub messages... To be honest they don't deserve to be helped!!!
