ResNet Update

It seems after 7 days ITS have acknowledged the fault: You will all be aware that the problems on the ResNet seem to have exacerbated since the latter part of last week. We have instigated a Major Incident within IT Services, which was originally called on Thursday of last week and re-instigated yes...

Well, I for one will certainly be turning up this week as I'm particularly unhappy with ITS at the moment. Those of you that were there will probably remeber that one of the things discussed and agreed upon by both the staff and students was that the communications from ITS to us has been fairly bad...

Further faults The DNS servers were unaccessible to me all through last night and most of today. The connection resets have started again tonight and so I've written a full fault report to the ITS helpdesk. This includes a full log of all the disconnects (it's long). These were from 19:52 to 20:13 a...

For me, the service was disconnecting and reconnecting every 2 minutes from 19:54 to 20:15 and then again every few minutes from 20:46 to 21:33. People I know accross campus on msn were going on and off at the same time, one in Hurst and one in Claycroft so this isn't likely to be a subnet specific ...

ITS Meeting - Weds 23rd

Oh yes, I also asked them if they read these forums. They sort of half laughed and said 'only when we are really bored'

ITS Meeting - Weds 23rd

Ok, i'm going to write out what I remeber of the ITS meeting this afternoon. P2P: ----- The AUP rule against P2P systems is reiterated, the reason they give for the rule are: 1) It over uses the bandwidth to the outside world, they insist this is a serious problem and proven to be P2P created (I do ...

I've just been reading the minutes of the past focus group meetings (none of which I went to) and I noticed that in those for the 2nd November 2005 they've written: Issue of filesharing was raised. Re-iterated that internal filesharing was permitted, but that all external filesharing remains prohibi...

Well no MSN IS NOT!!! a P2P app.. that is for sure.. it may in certain circumstances connect directly, but the term P2P is more specific to that.. it is defined by a group of apps that use the group of protocols inside the P2P group. these either use or dont use a server as a central meeting point ...

Further to that, I've had a thought with regard to the university receiving complaints(are these rumours or verified now?) from companies about the university file sharing activity. Do the large internet backbone companies receive complaints like this, since they must carry vast amounts of P2P file ...

Well, I still maintain that the definition of peer to peer is a little loose. You could argue, on the lowest level, that technically everything on the internet is not peer to peer, since every connection(TCP or UDP) works between one machine acting as a server(listening) and another client machine c...

How eactly do ITS/ResNet know who are using DC++? Is it just by port and address of people connecting to the hub or do they actually look in the packets for DC++ traffic? I was thinking about this and then wondering exactly what they are allowed to look at in your traffic. It doesn't say they reserv...
